Dr. Nicky Wolmarans - Learning to use professional knowledge in context
Twenty-four years into democracy, South Africa is still deeply divided along racial lines. Professional degrees are often seen as a stepping stone out of poverty for students and their families. However, racial disparities in access to and success in higher education remain. In this seminar Dr. Wolmarans argues that the importance of disciplinary knowledge tends to be overlooked, and shows that the translation between “academic” to “applied” knowledge is far more complex than might be assumed by any notion of ‘the application of knowledge to solve problems’.
